I'm Nitin Kumar, Lead Project Coordinator at Debugged Pro. I help software and digital agencies in India and the USA ship AI features clients can trust. Tavus Griffin is the video conversation news your delivery leads should brief this week.

Tavus's October 1, 2026 research post introduces Griffin as the company's first Human Interaction Model. CEO Hassaan Raza and Head of Research Ioannis Patras signed the announcement with the Tavus research team.

Decrypt's October 2, 2026 report by Jose Antonio Lanz repeats the live-study numbers and stresses that Griffin-Lite is still limited to trusted testers.

This guide sticks to those verified details. It turns them into practical checks for India and USA agency teams that build sales bots, support flows, training tools, and hiring screens.

What Tavus Griffin actually is

Tavus Griffin is a full-duplex, video-to-video model. It takes in a person's live audio and video and generates its own speech and face in real time.

Tavus calls the class a Human Interaction Model, or HIM. The point is not a prettier avatar alone. The model is designed to read expressions, pauses, and timing, not only transcripts.

Most realtime video agents still work as a cascade. Speech becomes text, a language model replies, then other systems rebuild voice and face. Each handoff adds lag and drops cues such as tone or what is on camera.

Griffin keeps perception, conversational decisions, and audiovisual generation running together. Tavus says the model reassesses the exchange every sub-second mini-turn and can nod, backchannel, interrupt, or wait.

Verified study and benchmark numbers for Tavus Griffin

Agencies should separate Tavus's live study from NVIDIA's VideoFDB scores. Both matter, but they answer different questions.

Live face-to-face study

Participants were recruited through an independent research platform.
They were told they would meet another participant for a one-minute call about plans for the year.
Only after the call were they asked whether their partner might not be a real person.
On Griffin-Lite, 26 of 54 participants (48%) said their partner was a real person.
On Tavus's previous Phoenix-4.5 + Sparrow-2 + Raven-1 stack, 1 of 41 participants (2.4%) said the same.
People who said real averaged about 79% confidence. People who said AI averaged about 81%.
Those who grew suspicious usually did so within the first 20 seconds.

Decrypt correctly notes this is not Alan Turing's classic imitation game. Judges were not told a machine might be present. The State of AI coverage makes the same caution: treat the claim as Tavus's own study under its protocol.

NVIDIA VideoFDB scores

Tavus says NVIDIA scored VideoFDB independently in September 2026. The benchmark has generation and perception tracks.

Generation: Griffin-Lite 3.83, human reference 3.92, next-best published system Gemini 2.5 + Anam 2.80.
Perception: Griffin-Lite 3.73, human reference 4.20, strongest reported baseline MiniCPM-o 4.5 at 3.44.
Takeover-rate alignment: 62.8% on generation and 73.8% on perception, highest of compared systems per Tavus.

Read the gap carefully. Griffin comes close to human on producing conversational behavior. It still trails people on reading the other person.

How the Tavus Griffin system is built

According to the official post, Griffin is a two-part system that runs concurrently during a call.

Continuous Conversational Modeling ingests audio and video, decides when and how to respond, and emits control signals for words, tone, stance, expression, and gesture.
Audio-Visual Generation turns those signals into streaming speech and streaming video.

Speech side

A fast autoregressive diffusion transformer generates latent speech as controls arrive.
Tavec, a convolutional autoencoder, maps 48 kHz audio into a continuous latent without codebooks.
Packets can be as small as 10 ms, so speech can start before a full sentence exists.
Griffin-Lite can clone a speaker voice from about 10 seconds of reference audio.

Video side

The video path generates 720p in 320 ms chunks in real time from one reference image.
Tavus says it controls the full scene, including hands, chair motion, shadows, and background.
Earlier Tavus models leaned on heavy 3D priors that limited large gestures and dynamic backgrounds.
True audio-to-video latency averaged 0.43 seconds on NVIDIA H100 GPUs in Tavus's comparison, about half the next fastest published method they cite.

Demo clips on the research page show coaching through a Rubik's Cube, Simon Says gesture games, shared storytelling with interruptions, and soldering guidance that waits when the person pauses.

Access, safety, and release limits

Key point: Griffin-Lite is not a general customer product yet. Tavus is limiting access to select trusted testers as a research preview.

The company says the same qualities that make HIMs useful can also deceive people into thinking they are talking to a human. It is building disclosure features and working with AI safety organizations before a wider release.

Trusted testers can request access through a form on the Tavus Griffin page. Agency account managers should not promise Griffin in a live client bot until Tavus publishes customer availability and disclosure controls.

Why India and USA agency teams should care now

Even before public GA, the announcement changes client conversations. Buyers already ask for realtime video agents in sales, recruiting, healthcare intake, training, and support.

The State of AI notes Tavus says about 150,000 developers and businesses build on its platform. Decrypt reports a $40 million Series B led by CRV in November 2025. When Griffin ships, it will likely land inside existing Tavus deployments first.

Delivery opportunities

Practice tools for hard conversations, interviews, and sales objections.
Camera-based tech support where a user holds a part up to the lens.
Tutoring flows that watch whether a learner looks confused or stuck.
Training avatars that backchannel and wait instead of interrupting every pause.

Delivery risks

Undisclosed AI on a video call can break trust and, in some markets, consumer rules.
Voice cloning from short audio plus full-scene rendering raises deepfake and fraud risk.
A one-minute study is not a multi-minute enterprise proof. Long sessions can still drift.
India and USA clients will ask different privacy, consent, and recording questions. Plan both.

Agency delivery checklist for Tavus Griffin pilots

Use this checklist in India and USA squads before anyone demos Griffin-like video agents to a client.

Confirm access status. Research preview only. Do not put Griffin-Lite in a paid client SLA.
Write disclosure copy first. Decide how the UI, first spoken line, and transcripts label the agent as AI.
Separate demo from identity. Never treat a live face alone as proof for payments, vendor bank changes, or credential resets.
Add a second channel. Require SMS, authenticator, or known-device approval for money movement and hiring offers.
Log consent. Store when the user was told they are speaking with AI, and keep session retention limits clear.
Run locale scripts. Test India English, US English, and any regional languages the client expects before you sell the idea.
Measure interruption quality. Time dead air, false barge-ins, and failed waits during silence.
Review brand likeness. Reference-image clones of executives need legal and PR sign-off.
Plan fallbacks. If the video path fails, drop to audio or human handoff without stranding the user.
Map competitor claims. Clients will compare cascade avatar stacks. Keep Griffin's duplex claim precise.

Sample project brief you can reuse this week

Here is a short brief format I use with India and USA delivery managers after a news spike like this.

Goal: Evaluate whether a full-duplex video agent improves demo conversion or support resolution versus the current cascade avatar.
Non-goals: No production rollout of Griffin-Lite. No executive face clones without counsel.
Success metrics: Disclosure acknowledgment rate, average time to first useful answer, human handoff rate, and user trust score after the call.
Security gates: No payment or password flows on the video agent path until out-of-band checks exist.
Owners: Delivery lead, security reviewer, client success manager, and legal contact.
Timeline: One-week discovery, one-week controlled tester review if access is granted, then a go or no-go memo.

Keep the memo boring and factual. Clients do not need hype. They need clear limits and a next experiment.

What not to overclaim in client decks

Do not say AI has passed the Turing test in the classic sense. Say Tavus reports a 48% human-belief rate in its one-minute video study.
Do not say Griffin is generally available. Say research preview for trusted testers.
Do not imply NVIDIA endorses the product. Say NVIDIA scored VideoFDB with its own judge, per Tavus.
Do not promise accent-perfect, long-form coaching across every India and USA locale without your own tests.
Do not treat a 0.43 second audio-to-video latency figure as guaranteed on every laptop or mobile network.

Key Takeaways

Tavus Griffin is Tavus's first Human Interaction Model, announced October 1, 2026.
It is full-duplex video-to-video, not a simple speech-to-text cascade with an avatar bolted on.
Tavus's study: 48% (26/54) thought Griffin-Lite was human after one minute; prior stack hit 2.4%.
NVIDIA VideoFDB generation 3.83 vs human 3.92; perception 3.73 vs human 4.20.
Griffin-Lite remains a research preview while Tavus works on disclosure and safety.
India and USA agencies should brief clients, harden identity checks, and wait for customer release before SLA promises.

FAQ

What is Tavus Griffin?

Tavus Griffin is the company's first Human Interaction Model (HIM), announced on October 1, 2026. It is a full-duplex, video-to-video system that listens, watches, and generates speech and video at the same time.

Did Tavus Griffin pass the video Turing test?

Tavus reports that 26 of 54 participants (48%) believed Griffin-Lite was a real person after a one-minute live call. Decrypt notes this is not the classic Turing setup, because participants were not told a machine might be present. Treat the claim as Tavus's own study result, not an independent peer-reviewed verdict.

Is Griffin available for agency client work today?

No for production customers. Griffin-Lite is a research preview for select trusted testers while Tavus builds disclosure and safety features. Agencies should plan discovery and security reviews now, not promise Griffin in live client bots yet.

How did Griffin score on NVIDIA VideoFDB?

On the generation track, Griffin-Lite scored 3.83 versus a 3.92 human reference and 2.80 for the next-best published system (Gemini 2.5 + Anam). On perception, it scored 3.73 versus a 4.20 human reference. Tavus says NVIDIA scored the benchmark independently.

What should India and USA agency teams do first?

Brief sales and delivery leads on the access limit, add disclosure rules for any video agent pilots, and harden identity checks for payment, hiring, and credential changes that still treat a live face as proof.
