I'm Nitin Kumar, Lead Project Coordinator at Debugged Pro. I help software agencies in India and the USA ship AI and hardware work clients can defend in review. On October 2, 2026, Meta open sourced the code behind Muse gadgets and opened a waitlist for Muse Home Link.

The Verge report by Jay Peters covers both moves in one piece. Meta wants makers to put Muse on ESP32 boards, Raspberry Pi boxes, E Ink panels, HDMI sticks, and small touchscreens.

Meta published the same message on its Muse Gadgets site, with Apache 2.0 SDKs and a clear warning: proceed at your own risk.

This guide sticks to those verified facts. It turns them into delivery checks for India and USA agency teams that support product, IoT, and AI clients.

What Muse gadgets are and why Meta opened the code

Muse gadgets are open source devices you build yourself. You connect Muse to displays, buttons, sensors, actuators, and other bench parts.

Meta says: "Muse gadgets are open source devices you build yourself." You program an off-the-shelf ESP32 board or set up a Raspberry Pi with Meta's SDKs.

The device SDKs and firmware ship under the Apache 2.0 license. Meta provides them as-is, without warranty.

That framing matters for agencies. Clients may hear open source and assume production support. Meta is clear this path is for hackers and tinkering first.

Suggested DIY builds from Meta

Meta and press coverage share a short list of starter builds. None of these are finished retail products from Meta.

Load Muse on a color E Ink display to show reminders.
Add Muse to an HDMI stick so you can show it on a big screen.
Put Muse on a small touchscreen device that looks a bit like a DIY Muse Charm.
Wire audio in and out, or other sensors, on an ESP32 board.
Hack Linux commands so Muse can help with sysadmin chores or Home Assistant.

Our earlier Debugged Pro note on the Meta Muse Charm on-device AI takeaways covers the Charm form factor. Muse gadgets are the DIY cousin, not a replacement Charm SKU.

Muse Home Link: Meta's own USB-C bridge

Meta also built one official gadget: Muse Home Link. It is a small USB-C device that puts Muse on your home Wi-Fi so the agent can reach compatible local devices.

Meta's Muse Home Link page lists the hardware and the setup flow. Nat Friedman of Meta Superintelligence Labs said Meta manufactured 5,000 units.

Community-built skills can let Muse turn on a light, control a TV, send a document to a printer, and more. The exact skills depend on your setup.

Storage: 8 MB flash.
Wireless: Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Connector: USB-C and USB-A.
Indicator: LED for pairing and device status.
Size: 35 x 42 x 10 mm.

Who can claim Muse Home Link

Meta says Muse Home Link is free with an active Muse subscription in the United States only. Limit one per subscriber. Ships in October, first come, first served.

Home Link firmware is based on the open source ESP32 Device SDK. Meta also says Muse Home Link itself only runs official firmware and cannot be reflashed.

That split is easy to miss in a client pitch. DIY boards are open. The giveaway dongle is locked to official firmware.

How Muse Home Link setup works

Meta documents a short setup path. Agency demos should follow this order so support tickets stay short.

Plug Home Link into any USB-C or USB-A power source near your router.
Add the device in the Muse app. Setup runs over Bluetooth LE, and you choose the Wi-Fi network.
Leave Home Link on that network so Muse can reach your devices.
Install community skills to teach Muse new actions.

Meta lists popular community skill targets such as Philips Hue, Sonos, Apple TV, Google Nest speakers, and Samsung TVs. Skills install from GitHub and can change or break.

Meta warns builders not to rely on community skills for safety-critical work. That includes home security, emergencies, and medical needs.

ESP32 and Linux SDKs agencies should track

Meta splits Muse gadgets tooling into two main SDKs on the official site.

ESP32 Device SDK

Connect an ESP32 board to Muse through the open source SDK. Add a screen for images, wire audio, or attach other sensors.

Linux Device SDK

Turn a spare Raspberry Pi or Linux box into a Muse gadget. Hack in your own commands for sysadmin chores or Home Assistant.

Meta also opened a Discord community for builders. Source code lives under Meta's open source Muse gadget SDK paths referenced from the gadgets site.

Engadget coverage by Karissa Bell on October 2, 2026 adds the same Nat Friedman context: open source firmware and a Linux SDK help people bring Muse to hardware, and the Home Link batch is a USB-C bridge for local HTTPS devices.

Delivery checklist for India and USA agency teams

Here is how I would brief a delivery lead on Monday morning. Keep the facts tight and the risk language honest.

Scope the ask before you promise a demo

Confirm whether the client wants a DIY Muse gadget prototype or the official Muse Home Link dongle.
If they want Home Link, confirm a US Muse subscription and waitlist timing for October shipping.
If they want DIY, pick ESP32 or Raspberry Pi early and name the display or sensor budget.
Separate Charm product talk from Muse gadgets DIY talk so stakeholders do not mix SKUs.

Security and compliance notes

Treat community skills as untrusted code until your security review says otherwise.
Keep Home Link off networks that hold production client data during early pilots.
Do not use community skills for safety-critical or regulated medical workflows.
Document that Meta ships SDKs as-is under Apache 2.0 with no warranty.
For India offshore teams supporting a USA client, log which engineer holds the US Muse account and Home Link unit.

Proposal language that stays accurate

Write the SOW in plain words. Say Meta open sourced Muse gadget SDKs on October 2, 2026. Say Home Link is a limited US subscriber giveaway of about 5,000 units.

Do not promise retail availability, global shipping, or custom Home Link firmware. Do not promise that every smart home brand will keep working through community skills.

Teams that need broader build help can start from our software development consulting page or browse related notes on our AI services page.

Pilot plan you can run in two weeks

Agencies often need a calendar, not a white paper. Use this two-week shape for a low-risk Muse gadgets spike.

Day 1 to 2: Read Meta's Muse Gadgets and Home Link pages. Decide DIY board versus Home Link waitlist.
Day 3 to 4: Order ESP32 or Raspberry Pi parts, or confirm US Muse subscription status for Home Link.
Day 5 to 7: Stand up a single display or sensor path. Record a two-minute demo video.
Day 8 to 10: Run a security pass on network placement, skill installs, and data that Muse can reach.
Day 11 to 14: Write a one-page client brief with limits, costs, and a go or no-go call.

India delivery pods can own board bring-up and demo video. USA leads should own Home Link waitlist claims and client Wi-Fi access rules.

Cost and staffing signals for agency quotes

Meta does not publish a retail price for Muse Home Link because it is a subscriber giveaway in the US. DIY Muse gadgets still have real costs.

ESP32 board, display, and cabling for a first prototype.
Raspberry Pi kit if you pick the Linux SDK path.
Engineer time for firmware bring-up, Discord questions, and demo polish.
Security review time before any client network join.
Buffer days for October Home Link shipping delays if the client insists on the official dongle.

Quote the spike as a fixed discovery package when you can. Hourly open-ended tinkering burns goodwill fast when boards brick or skills break.

What this means for product roadmaps

Meta is testing how far makers will take Muse beyond glasses and Charm. Engadget notes that hobbyist builds could inform Meta's own hardware later.

For agencies, the near-term value is client readiness. Product teams will ask whether Muse can sit on a desk display, a TV stick, or a home network bridge.

Muse gadgets give you a public, documented answer today. You can show ESP32 and Linux paths, cite Apache 2.0, and explain Home Link limits without guessing.

Keep Charm, glasses, and Muse gadgets in separate requirement rows. Mixing them creates false expectations about form factor, flashing rights, and geography.

Key Takeaways

Meta open sourced Muse gadgets SDKs for ESP32 and Linux on October 2, 2026, under Apache 2.0, with a proceed-at-your-own-risk warning.
