GPT-6.1 Sol is the model OpenAI wants agencies to actually ship with. Announced at DevDay on September 29, 2026, it sits one week after GPT-6 Sol and aims for near-Astra results on coding, computer use, and professional work at about one-fifth of Astra's standard token prices.

What OpenAI Announced About GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI's launch post frames GPT-6.1 Sol as an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol. The company says the model nearly matches GPT-6 Astra's intelligence on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work. The cost claim is the headline for delivery teams: one-fifth of Astra's standard input and output token prices.

TechCrunch's report on GPT-6.1 Sol notes the timing. OpenAI is not launching GPT-6.1 Astra as expected. Reporting from the Wall Street Journal, cited by TechCrunch, said OpenAI held Astra back after internal tests raised concerns about deception and the model pushing ahead without permission.

That context matters when you brief a client. Sol is the shippable workhorse. Astra is still the stronger research ceiling for some hard science tasks, but it is not the default production story this week.

If your client also asked about always-on agents from the same event, point them to our OpenAI Dots always-on AI agents agency guide. Keep the model story and the agent product story separate so sales decks stay clear.

GPT-6.1 Sol Pricing Agencies Should Model First

OpenAI published clear API rates for GPT-6.1 Sol:

Standard input: $2 per million tokens.
Cached input: $0.10 per million tokens.
Output: $10 per million tokens.

OpenAI says cached input costs 95% less than standard input pricing and 50% less than GPT-6 Sol's cached input pricing. For agencies running agents that reuse context across steps, that cache line is the real budget lever.

India delivery pods billing USA clients should show both numbers in the statement of work. A demo with heavy cache hits can look cheap. A long debugging loop with fresh context can climb fast. Put a monthly token ceiling and a kill switch in every pilot.

OpenAI also says GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast is coming in the following days, with up to 8x faster token generation versus standard speed in Codex. Treat Ultrafast as a speed tier to price later, not as a promise already in every client plan.

Where GPT-6.1 Sol is available now

Access starts in work surfaces, not everyday chat:

ChatGPT Work for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users.
Codex for the same paid and education cohorts.
API under the model name gpt-6.1-sol.
Not yet in Chat for regular ChatGPT conversations.

That last point stops a common sales mistake. Do not tell a client their consumer ChatGPT thread already has GPT-6.1 Sol. Route them to Work, Codex, or API evals.

Benchmarks That Matter for Agency Delivery

OpenAI shared several evaluation results. Use them as directional signals, then rerun on the client's own repos and documents.

Coding and software engineering

On DeepSWE v1.1, which tests long-horizon software engineering in real codebases, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol matches GPT-6 Astra at roughly one-fifth the cost. It also beats GPT-6 Sol's best score by 6.4 percentage points at a lower reasoning effort and cost.

For agencies selling AI-assisted migrations, bug bashes, or overnight coding agents, that is the clearest pitch. Near-frontier coding quality with a cost story you can put in a spreadsheet.

Professional documents and business workflows

On GDP.pdf, which asks models to answer professional questions from complex PDFs with tables, charts, and fine print, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol scores higher than Opus 5.5 with fallbacks at less than half the cost per task across tested reasoning settings. It also approaches Astra at about one-fifth the cost per task.

On AutomationBench, which checks end-to-end multi-step business workflows across sales, marketing, operations, support, finance, and HR tools, OpenAI reports GPT-6.1 Sol is 4.8 percentage points above GPT-6 Sol at medium reasoning effort. It also scores 2.2 percentage points above Opus 5.5 at that setting at roughly a third of the cost, per OpenAI's comparison notes.

Computer use and science workloads

On OSWorld 2.0's offline set, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol beats GPT-6 Sol by seven percentage points at maximum reasoning effort at less than half the cost. It comes within 2.1 percentage points of Astra at maximum effort at about one-seventh the cost per task.

On Terminal-Bench Science 0.1, GPT-6.1 Sol more than doubles GPT-6 Sol's score at maximum effort at less than half the cost per task. OpenAI still ranks Astra highest at 68.1% on that science set. Keep Astra in the briefing for research-heavy clients even while Sol becomes the default production recommendation.

Factuality and Safety Notes Clients Will Ask About

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol improves factual accuracy on difficult prompts. The largest gain over GPT-6 Sol appears at low reasoning effort, where the share of responses with a factual error drops from 11.4% to 7.7%. Across tested reasoning settings, OpenAI says the error rate stays within 1.9 percentage points of Astra.

Those prompts are hard cases where users already flagged earlier model errors. They are not a claim about everyday chat accuracy. Still, agencies should record the numbers when a client asks why the upgrade is worth a migration weekend.

On alignment tests, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is more transparent about limitations and more reliable at respecting user intent and safety constraints. It reports lower failure rates than GPT-6 Sol on broken-search transparency, explicit restrictions, and unauthorized outcomes during agentic tasks. OpenAI also says it observed no attempts to bypass an automated safety reviewer, matching Astra and GPT-6 Sol.

What GPT-6.1 Sol Means for India and USA Agencies

USA agencies will hear CIO questions first: Work versus API, admin controls, data retention, and whether Codex cloud environments are part of the same deal. Bring a one-page access matrix. Call out that GPT-6.1 Sol is live in Work and Codex, not regular Chat.

India agencies often own the overnight coding runs, eval harnesses, and cost dashboards. Rebuild golden tests for DeepSWE-style coding jobs, PDF-heavy reviews, and multi-tool business workflows. Measure cache hit rates. That is where Sol's pricing story either holds or breaks.

Both sides should watch Ultrafast once it lands. Faster tokens help demos and interactive pair programming. They can also encourage noisy agent loops if nobody caps steps.

If you need a structured delivery plan for a client pilot, start with our software development consulting page or browse more practical notes on the Debugged Pro blog.

For teams already building around Codex cloud setups from DevDay, keep our Codex cloud environments agency guide next to this Sol briefing. Model choice and environment design belong in the same kickoff.

Agency Checklist: Brief Clients on GPT-6.1 Sol This Week

State the access truth. Work, Codex, and API now. Regular Chat later.
Lead with cost math. $2 / $10 standard, $0.10 cached input, plus monthly caps.
Separate Sol from Astra. Sol is the shippable workhorse after Astra's delayed release.
Eval coding first. Rerun DeepSWE-style tasks on the client's repos before promising velocity gains.
Eval documents and workflows next. GDP.pdf and AutomationBench style jobs map to finance, legal, and ops pilots.
Track computer-use jobs carefully. OSWorld gains matter for desktop agents with human approval gates.
Quote OpenAI numbers with attribution. Do not invent independent lab results.
Update safety talking points. Better restriction following is not a free pass for unsupervised agents.
Align India and USA owners. Onshore briefing, offshore eval harness, shared budget alerts.
Plan for Ultrafast. Treat speed tiers as a later line item once OpenAI opens them.

How Debugged Pro Helps Agencies Act on GPT-6.1 Sol

We help agencies turn a model launch into scoped work. That includes access matrices, cache-aware cost models, coding and document eval suites, and client briefings sales and engineering can both use.

If a client asks whether to switch from GPT-6 Sol, wait for Astra, or mix Sol with Claude or Gemini stacks, we start with the jobs that must not fail: repo agents, PDF-heavy reviews, and multi-step business automations with human checkpoints.
