Gemini agent is Google Cloud's push to move Gemini from chat into finished work. At a Gemini at Work event on October 8, 2026, Google said businesses get the first wave. Consumers come later, after security, scale, and performance problems get clearer answers.

If you run delivery, product, or IT services for India and USA clients, this is not another demo slide. It is a system that can hold objectives, call tools, join Slack, and leave an audit trail under its own identity. This guide sticks to verified reporting from TechCrunch, Google's own post, and SiliconANGLE. You will get features, cost controls, risks, and a pilot checklist.

What Gemini agent is and why agencies should care

TechCrunch's Sarah Perez covered the announcement on October 8, 2026. Google launched a unified agent that can answer questions and get work done from a single interface. The company framed it as Gemini entering the agentic age after years of chat-first products.

Google's own Gemini at Work post calls it a universal agent for work. Work starts in the prompt window. The agent plans the job, uses skills and tools, connects to business systems, and brings finished output back into documents, inbox, and developer environments teams already use.

Sundar Pichai set the scale story early. Gemini has more than one billion monthly active users. Nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses use Gemini Enterprise at work. That corporate footprint is why Google starts with businesses, not consumers.

For agencies, the practical question is simple. Can you hand a bounded objective to an agent, keep client data inside approved systems, and still show a clean audit trail when a buyer asks? Gemini agent is Google's answer to that ask, not a consumer toy launch.

How Gemini agent plans work with objectives and skills

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said the agent can be given objectives, not just instructions. That means it plans the work, loads custom skills and tools, and reaches into internal systems to finish the goal. SiliconANGLE quotes him saying you delegate an outcome and come back to finished work.

Requests can include attachments: files, folders, or projects that combine files and skills. Users watch progress in a tasks inbox. There you see thinking, subagents, skills, code, and status. That visibility matters when a PM or tech lead must interrupt a runaway loop.

Model choice and third-party Claude

By default, the AI picks the best model for the task. Users can override and choose models, including third-party Anthropic Claude. Google said open source and other private models will join the picker later. SiliconANGLE adds that simple jobs may run on a faster model while long-horizon work uses a frontier model.

Agency note: model choice is a delivery control, not a fashion choice. Put allowed models in the pilot brief. If a client bans a vendor, document the block before someone flips the picker in a live project channel.

Connectors, MCP, and where Gemini agent can run

Reported connectors include Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, and more. The agent can also connect securely to any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server inside or outside the network.

Access paths cover iOS and Android, Windows and Mac desktops, the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack. SiliconANGLE stresses the omnipresent design: no single dedicated shell is required. The agent shows up where the user already works.

That breadth is useful for India USA delivery teams that live across Slack, Jira, and mixed Microsoft or Google tenants. It is also a risk surface. Every connector is a permission decision. Map which systems the pilot may touch before you attach production client folders.

Agent identity: Workspace account and audit trail

One of the strongest enterprise details in TechCrunch's report is identity. The AI gets its own Workspace account, as if it were another co-worker. It has its own email and its own context. It knows who sits on which team, time zones, who must approve items, and what is on calendars.

People can call the agent by tagging it, emailing it, sharing with it, or adding it to a group chat. As it acts, it writes an audit trail attributed to the agent, not a person. That attribution is the difference between a shared login nightmare and a reviewable system of record.

SiliconANGLE adds that subagents can carry dedicated identities and expertise, with their own @agents.company.com style emails and persistent storage, limited to context the user or team provides. Treat that as a staffing diagram for machines. Name owners for each agent identity the same way you name owners for service accounts.

Agency practice: create a short identity register. List agent email, purpose, data scope, approvers, and kill switch. Put it next to your human RACI. Clients who already ask about AI agent containment will expect that document in the first security call.

Early customers and who is testing Gemini agent

TechCrunch lists early testers: sportswear brand On, Shopify, and PayPal. Gemini Enterprise customers cited include BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper, SOMPO, Ulta Beauty, and Wesfarmers.

Those names matter for agency sales conversations. They show the product is aimed at regulated and multi-brand operators, not only startups. Still, customer logos are not a green light for your client's data class. Run your own pilot with your own connectors and approval rules.

Spend caps, smart routing, and cost control for agencies

Google said new flexible spending options help keep enterprise AI costs under control. The list includes multi-model orchestration, smart routing, and real-time spend caps.

SiliconANGLE fills in the billing mechanics. Hard limits live in the Cloud Billing Console. Gemini monitors token usage. If a spend cap triggers, the agent pauses. A person can resume only after accepting that work will exceed the budget. Tracking can sit per project so teams charge AI cost back to departments.

For India USA agencies, this is the difference between a surprise invoice and a managed line item. Put spend caps in the SOW language. Tell the client which project pays for which agent workload. Review the pause policy with finance before the pilot goes live.

Agency playbook: pilot Gemini agent without chaos

Use this sequence for a two-to-four week pilot. Keep scope small. Prefer internal workstreams before client-facing send or commit actions.

Pick one objective class. Examples: weekly status digest, Jira triage draft, internal FAQ answers from approved Confluence spaces.
Inventory connectors. Mark each as allowed, read-only, or blocked. Separate client folders from demo data.
Register the agent identity. Email, owners, approvers, time zone rules, kill switch.
Set model policy. Default routing is fine for many tasks. Document when Claude or another picker option is allowed.
Turn on spend caps. Start low. Require human approval to exceed the cap.
Define human gates. No external email, production commit, or ticket close without a person.
Review the tasks inbox daily. Catch bad tool loops early.
Write the after-action note. What worked, what leaked time, what the client may ask next.

Pair this with language clients already accept. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework gives you Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage vocabulary for risk reviews. You do not need to invent a new framework slide for every pitch.

Risks India USA agencies should flag early

Over-broad connectors: One Slack workspace can hold many client channels. Scope hard.
Shadow approvals: If nobody owns the agent inbox, stalled spend caps create chaos.
Model picker drift: A teammate may enable a third-party model a contract forbids.
Audit confusion: Without clear agent attribution, security reviews stall.
Premature client send: Agents that email or post need a human gate on day one.

None of these risks mean you should ignore the product. They mean you treat Gemini agent like a new junior teammate with credentials. Hire carefully. Supervise closely. Expand scope only after the first clean weeks of logs.

What to tell clients this week

Keep the client update short and factual. Google is shipping a business-first Gemini agent that takes objectives, connects to common enterprise tools, holds its own Workspace identity, and offers spend controls. Early testers include On, Shopify, and PayPal. Fortune-scale Gemini Enterprise adoption is already high by Google's own figures.

Then add your agency stance. You will pilot on a bounded internal objective. You will map connectors and data classes. You will set spend caps and human approval gates. You will report findings before any client production rollout. That story beats vague excitement every time.
