Gemini Enterprise just took a big step from chat assistant to digital coworker. On 8 October 2026, Google Cloud showed a new universal Gemini agent that can take on full assignments, keep working for hours or days, and even get its own email address, calendar and Drive storage.

I'm Nitin from Debugged Pro. Our team builds websites, apps and AI features for clients in India and the USA, and many of them already run on Google Workspace. So this announcement is not abstract for us. Below is a plain look at what Google said, what is still unclear, and how agencies and businesses should prepare.

What Google Announced for Gemini Enterprise

The news came at Google's Gemini at Work 2026 event, led by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. The livestreamed keynote was set for 10:30 AM PT on 8 October, which is 11:00 PM in India.

According to VentureBeat's report on the new Gemini agents, Google wants employees to hand one agent a goal instead of juggling many small assistants. The agent works out the steps, reaches the systems it needs and returns finished work.

Here is what the universal agent is designed to do:

Research and create. It can gather information, draft documents and write code.
Run long jobs. It can handle workflows that last multiple days and run several assignments in parallel.
React to triggers. It can respond to scheduled tasks or events.
Coordinate helpers. It can form temporary teams of specialised sub-agents for complex work.
Follow you across devices. Work runs in the cloud, so you can start on a laptop and pick it up on a phone.

Google says the agent works through Gemini Enterprise and tools people already use. That includes Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack, plus the web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and command-line tools.

It is not locked to Gemini models

This part surprised a lot of people. Google supplies its own Gemini models, but the agent can already use Anthropic's Claude models. Google says support for more proprietary and open-weight models is planned.

For buyers, that matters. You could keep the same agent setup, company context and skills while switching the model behind a task.

AI Coworkers With Their Own Workspace Accounts

The agent can work in two main ways. It can act as one person's assistant. Or it can be a persistent digital coworker that a whole team shares.

The coworker setup is the headline. Google's example is an "Event Planner Agent" created by a manager. That agent can get:

Its own Workspace account and email address
Its own calendar
Its own Drive storage
A listing in the company directory

Staff could then give it work the way they would a colleague. They might mention it in Google Chat or ask it to edit a document.

Google has not said that every agent must have its own account. The dedicated account is one configuration, not a rule. Google also did not say whether admins can switch individual parts on or off, or how provisioning and licensing will work.

How the agent remembers your business

Google describes four kinds of memory for the agent:

Session memory for the task in progress
Semantic memory for knowledge it builds up over time
Procedural memory for workflows it has learned
Episodic memory for past work

The goal is simple. You should not have to explain the same process, people or rules every time you start a task.

The agent also connects to business tools. Google listed Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, Git, BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks and Microsoft Teams. Companies can also plug in Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and share reusable instructions and tools in internal registries.

Security: Agent Identity, Audit Logs and Limited Access

An agent with its own inbox and Drive is powerful. It is also a new kind of account to protect. Google covered several controls.

Attested identity. Each agent gets a cryptographically attested identity, with permissions managed through enterprise security systems.
Audit logs. Its actions are logged, including when it spins up isolated environments to run code.
Agent Gateway. This enforces company-wide rules on how agents talk to outside systems.
Sandboxing. Code runs inside set boundaries.
Shared access only. Coworker agents can see only what team members explicitly share with them. They do not inherit a person's full set of permissions.

That last point is the one I would underline for clients. A lot of AI risk comes from agents that quietly carry a human's full access.

Google's Agent Identity documentation explains the base layer. Each agent gets an identity based on the SPIFFE standard. Unlike service accounts, these identities are not shared by default, cannot be impersonated and do not allow long-lived keys. Access tokens are bound to the agent's certificates, which makes stolen tokens much harder to reuse.

Gemini Enterprise Costs and Smart Routing

Long-running agents can burn through budget fast. Google spoke to this directly.

Smart Routing picks a model for each workload based on performance and cost. Hard tasks can go to pricier models, and simple ones to cheaper models.
Project spending limits can pause agent activity once a budget runs out.
Cost tracking lets companies assign spend to individual departments.

Spend caps are not brand new. Google announced hard project-level limits in August, along with pay-as-you-go options and savings plans of 10% or 20% off for one-year or three-year commitments.

What we still do not know matters just as much. Google has not given a separate price for the universal agent. It has not said whether all features come with current Gemini Enterprise plans. And there is no general availability date yet.

Industry agents for finance and legal

Google is also adding specialised capabilities for data engineering, business analytics, finance and legal work. A Financial Services offering, now in preview, includes more than 50 foundational skills and links to data providers such as FactSet and LSEG. The Legal offering focuses on document permissions and confidentiality, with support for NetDocuments and iManage.

How Gemini Enterprise Compares With Rival AI Agents

Google is not alone here. Several big players want to own the main AI layer for work.

Company	Recent move	Main focus
Google	Universal Gemini agent, 8 October	Multi-day work, coworker identities, Gemini and Claude models
Microsoft	New Copilot, 25 September	Home, Cowork, Code and the Autopilot background agent
OpenAI	Dots agents, 29 September	Always-on agents across connected apps
Anthropic	Claude for Google Workspace, 6 October	Editing Docs, Sheets and Slides from Claude
SpaceXAI	Grok Bot in August, Team Bots on 28 September	Persistent AI workers with their own cloud computers

The pattern is clear. AI tools are moving from chat windows to long-running digital workers. The real contest now is about trust, controls and how well each agent fits into the systems a company already uses.

Real Adoption: What Early Customers Are Doing

Google says nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise. BNP Paribas is rolling it out to more than 65,000 employees, and Japanese insurer SOMPO has built more than 10,000 custom agents. Note that these numbers cover the existing platform, not the new universal agent.

A clear example landed the same day. In its Orange Spain press release, Google Cloud said the telecom operator has deployed more than 1,000 custom AI agents on Gemini Enterprise. Orange Spain reported close to 100% license activity within 30 days. Staff built agents for HR, IT, sales and customer service.

Those agents handle work like incident triage, root-cause analysis from system logs and internal knowledge search. The rollout sits on a data foundation Orange Spain has built with Google Cloud since 2018, using BigQuery and Cloud Storage. That is a useful lesson: clean data came first, agents came second.

What This Means for Agencies and Businesses in India and the USA

Many Indian IT firms and US agencies support clients on Google Workspace. When those clients ask "Should we turn on Gemini agents?", they will look to their tech partners for a straight answer.

Here is where we see real openings:

Setup and governance work. Someone has to decide which agents exist, what they can see and who owns them.
Integration projects. Connecting agents to CRMs, ticketing tools and data warehouses through MCP servers is real build work.
Data cleanup. Agents are only as good as the files and records they read.
Cost control. Clients will need help setting budgets, routing rules and reports.

We looked at how Indian IT majors are betting on this platform in our post on Gemini Enterprise with Tech Mahindra and LTM. The new agent makes that bet bigger.

A practical starting checklist

Choose one workflow. Start with something narrow and repeatable, like a weekly status report or ticket sorting.
Decide the setup. Personal assistant or shared coworker? Only give a separate account when a team truly needs it.
Share the minimum. Give the agent only the folders, inboxes and tools that task needs.
Set a budget cap. Turn on project spending limits before the first long-running job.
Keep a human check. Review anything that goes to customers, moves money or changes records.
Read the logs. Check audit logs weekly for the first month.
Ask Google the open questions. Pricing, licensing, admin controls and rollout dates are still unclear.

Here is a simple example. A digital agency could create a "Client Reports Agent" with access to one shared Drive folder and its analytics exports. Every Monday, it drafts each client's report and posts it in Chat for an account manager to approve. Nothing goes to the client without a person signing off.
