I'm Nitin Kumar, Lead Project Coordinator at Debugged Pro. I work with software and IT agencies in India and the USA. Copilot Computer Use entered public preview on October 1, 2026, and delivery leads want a clear client brief fast.

GitHub's Copilot Computer Use changelog and Technobezz's report on the desktop preview cover the product facts. This guide turns those facts into steps your agency can run this week.

Until now, Copilot was strong when tools exposed an API, a CLI, or MCP. Many client systems still live behind buttons, forms, and old desktop UIs. Computer Use is GitHub's answer for that gap.

What Copilot Computer Use actually does

GitHub describes Copilot Computer Use as a way for Copilot to interact with desktop apps on your behalf. It reads accessible app content and visual context, then acts through the GUI.

Supported actions include clicking controls, entering and editing text, pressing keys, scrolling, dragging, and moving through workflows across applications. That list matters for agencies that still support legacy tools.

Scope: public preview in Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app.
Platforms: macOS and Windows in the announcement. Linux is not listed for this feature.
Default state: disabled until you enable it.
Target gap: GUI-only or legacy software without API, CLI, or MCP access.

WinCentral's write-up on Copilot desktop app control stresses the same point: Copilot can operate software that used to need a person at the keyboard.

Why agencies care about Copilot Computer Use now

India and USA delivery teams already sell Copilot rollouts for coding and PR work. Clients now ask whether the same agent can touch finance portals, old desktop CRMs, and internal Windows tools.

Computer Use lets you answer with a yes that still has guardrails. It is not a claim that every app should be driven by an agent. It is a path for the apps that never got a modern integration.

If your team already briefed clients on Copilot Autopilot, keep the stories separate. Autopilot is about persistent enterprise agents. Computer Use is about GUI control inside Copilot CLI and the Copilot app.

Where it helps delivery work

Moving data between a browser form and a desktop finance app.
Updating slides or docs when the client only has a GUI flow.
Walking a demo expense or ticket workflow without writing a custom bot.
Supporting legacy tools that will not get an MCP server this quarter.

Where it should stay optional

Any workflow that already has a stable API, CLI, or MCP tool.
Production systems with secrets, payroll, or regulated personal data until policy is clear.
Unattended overnight jobs. The preview still expects approvals and a human nearby.

How to enable Copilot Computer Use safely

GitHub keeps the feature off by default. That is the right starting point for agency machines and client laptops.

Confirm the person uses Copilot CLI or the GitHub Copilot app on macOS or Windows.
In CLI, run /computer on. Check with /computer show. Turn off with /computer off.
In the Copilot app, open Settings, choose Computer Use, and enable Computer Use, or run /computer on.
On macOS, complete Accessibility and Screen Recording permission prompts before a live demo.
Keep org-managed disable options ready if the client wants a hard stop.

GitHub says Copilot asks for approval before controlling an app. Users can review or reset apps marked always allow. Put that review step in your runbook so juniors do not grant permanent access during a rush demo.

Prompt patterns that work for Copilot Computer Use

GitHub's guidance is practical. Describe the outcome, name the apps, and state constraints. Vague prompts create messy clicks and hard-to-audit sessions.

Outcome first: "Submit the July 8 flight expense already tagged in the portal."
Name the apps: Safari, Excel, the internal desktop CRM, or the presentation tool.
Add limits: "Do not send email. Stop before final submit and wait for me."
Prefer real tools when they exist: APIs, MCP, terminal commands, and browser tools stay more predictable.

WinCentral notes that GitHub itself frames Computer Use as the fallback when direct tools are missing. Teach that order to every engineer on the account: structured tools first, GUI control second.

Security and policy checklist for India and USA clients

Once Copilot can click and type, the risk model changes. Agencies in India that serve USA clients should write the policy before the pilot, not after the first surprise click.

Controls to document before any pilot

Feature switch: who may enable Computer Use, and who may force it off through managed settings.
App allowlist: which apps can be always allowed, and which need per-session approval.
Data classes: block use on payroll, health, or customer PII systems until legal signs off.
Audit notes: capture prompt text, apps touched, and whether a human approved each step.
Machine scope: company-managed laptops only for the first 30 days.

macOS specifics

Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions are not optional on Mac. Explain that to client IT before the demo day. A blocked permission looks like a product failure when it is really an OS grant.

How this fits broader agent risk work

Pair this brief with your wider agent security notes on the Debugged Pro blog. Custom coding guards such as Claude Code Mods solve a different problem. Computer Use is about GUI reach. Mods and policy packs are about how coding agents behave inside a repo.

Agency delivery plan for Copilot Computer Use

Use a short, boring plan. Clients trust boring plans more than flashy agent demos.

Week 0: confirm licenses, OS mix, and whether org settings can disable Computer Use.
Week 1: pick one low-risk GUI workflow and write the exact prompt plus stop rules.
Week 2: run a supervised pilot with two engineers and one client observer.
Week 3: decide keep, limit, or pause. Update the allowlist and the statement of work.

Debugged Pro teams often fold this into a wider software development consulting engagement. The goal is not to turn every clickpath into an agent job. The goal is to pick the few GUI gaps that burn billable hours every week.

Sample client brief language

You can paste language like this into a status email:

GitHub released Copilot Computer Use in public preview on October 1, 2026.
It works in Copilot CLI and the Copilot app on macOS and Windows, and it is off by default.
We will enable it only for a named pilot workflow, with per-app approval and a human in the loop.
If a stable API or MCP path exists, we will keep using that path instead of GUI control.

What GitHub did not announce

Stay honest in sales calls. Technobezz notes that GitHub did not list a separate price or subscription tier for Computer Use, did not give a general availability date, and did not mention Linux support for this feature.

Do not invent Free-tier access claims either. If a client's Copilot plan is unclear, verify access on a real machine before you put dates in a proposal.

No GA date in the changelog.
No Linux Computer Use claim in the Oct 1 announcement.
No public promise that every Copilot Free user gets the feature.
Direct tools remain preferred when they exist.

Practical use cases for India USA agency teams

Here are patterns we see across offshore and onshore pods.

India delivery pods serving USA clients

Use Computer Use for supervised demos of client-owned Windows tools that the pod cannot integrate this sprint. Record the session rules in the ticket. Keep production credentials on client-managed machines when the contract requires it.

USA product and internal tools teams

Use it to bridge a browser portal and a desktop finance or ops app during month-end busy work. Start with read-and-prepare steps. Leave final submit clicks for a human until the approval trail is proven.

QA and UAT support

Computer Use can walk a scripted GUI path while a tester watches. That helps when the app under test has no API hooks. It does not replace a test plan, and it should not silently accept dialogs that change data.

Key Takeaways

Copilot Computer Use is in public preview as of October 1, 2026 in Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app.
It targets macOS and Windows desktop apps, especially GUI-only and legacy tools without API, CLI, or MCP access.
The feature is disabled by default, asks for app approval, and can be turned off by organization-managed settings.
Agencies should prefer APIs and MCP when available, and reserve Computer Use for true GUI gaps.
India and USA teams need a written allowlist, pilot workflow, and human approval path before client demos.
GitHub has not published a GA date or Linux support for this feature in the launch notes.
