On October 7, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, calling it the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model it has shipped. The pitch is direct. Keep Opus and Sonnet for hard work. Put Haiku on the high-volume jobs that used to blow up client bills.

That split matters for software agencies in India and the USA. Support bots, classifiers, document Q&A, and coding subagents often run far more calls than the lead planner. A cheaper, faster small model changes the unit economics of those stacks.

I am Nitin from Debugged Pro. We help agencies design agent systems with clear cost gates. Below is a plain briefing from Anthropic's launch note and VentureBeat's independent write-up, plus a practical checklist you can run this week.

What Claude Haiku 5.5 Is Built To Do

Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 launch post frames the model for quick, repetitive workloads. The named list includes summaries, compaction, database queries, and classification. Speed is a first-class claim. Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 is its fastest model at each model's standard speed, though Opus in Fast Mode can still run faster.

The other design goal is pairing. Haiku sits beside Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 as a subagent on coding work. A larger model holds the plan. Haiku does the many short pulls that fill that plan.

Haiku 5.5 is also the first Haiku with an adjustable effort setting. Teams can trade cost for intelligence per task. Medium is the default in Anthropic's materials. That matters when you read vendor benchmarks, because max effort scores can look much stronger than default traffic.

Claude Haiku 5.5 Pricing Versus Haiku 4.5

Pricing is the headline for most agency owners. Anthropic prices Haiku 5.5 by prompt length. Short prompts get the steepest cut. Long prompts still get a real cut, just not as deep.

Charge per 1M tokens	Haiku 5.5 prompts up to 100k	Haiku 5.5 over 100k	Haiku 4.5
Input	$0.10	$0.50	$1.00
Output	$0.50	$2.50	$5.00
Cache reads	$0.01	$0.05	$0.10
Cache writes	$0.125	$0.625	$1.25

Anthropic says short-prompt rates are about 90% lower than Haiku 4.5, and long-prompt rates are about 50% lower. It also says around 90% of Haiku 4.5 requests fell under the 100k line. After token-use changes from a newer tokenizer, Anthropic estimates average run cost is about 75% lower than Haiku 4.5.

VentureBeat's Carl Franzen report confirms the same rate card and notes the lower tier matches OpenAI GPT-6 Luna input and output prices. VentureBeat also flags that Luna's higher tier starts above 272,000 input tokens, while Haiku's higher tier starts above 100,000. Token price alone is not job cost. Retries and accuracy still move the bill.

Sonnet cache cuts and Max/Team API credits

The launch is not only a Haiku story. Anthropic halved Sonnet 5.5 cache reads from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens. It estimates about 20% lower cost on most agentic Sonnet work when cache reads dominate. That helps India and USA teams that already run Sonnet-heavy agent loops.

Anthropic is also rolling out monthly Claude Platform API credits for Max and Team subscribers: $100 for Max 5x, $200 for Max 20x, and up to $500 pooled across a Team. Credits can be spent on any Claude model. Treat allocation and rollover rules as items to confirm in Anthropic's Help Center before you promise them to a client.

Benchmarks Agencies Should Read Carefully

Anthropic published vendor benchmarks comparing Haiku 5.5 with Haiku 4.5, GPT-6 Luna, and Sonnet 5.5. These are company-reported scores, not independent lab audits.

GDPval-AA v2.1: Haiku 5.5 at 1620, Haiku 4.5 at 735, Luna at 1437, Sonnet 5.5 at 1840
AA-Briefcase v1.1: Haiku 5.5 at 1578, Haiku 4.5 at 614, Luna at 1336, Sonnet 5.5 at 1824
OSWorld 2.1 offline subset: Haiku 5.5 at 72.4%, Haiku 4.5 at 15.7%, Luna at 48.9%, Sonnet 5.5 at 83.9%
Terminal-Bench 4.0: Haiku 5.5 at 39.2%, Haiku 4.5 at 0.0%, Luna at 16.4%, Sonnet 5.5 at 70.6%
FrontierCode 1.1 main: Haiku 5.5 at 46.4%, Luna at 42.4%, Sonnet 5.5 at 52.1% (High effort)

VentureBeat notes an important caveat on Terminal-Bench. Anthropic's chart places the roughly 39% Haiku score at maximum effort, while medium effort lands near 20%. If your default client setting is medium, do not sell the max-effort number as everyday performance.

Anthropic is clear on role split. Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remain better for complex agentic coding. Haiku 5.5 is for narrowly scoped work that older Haiku prices made hard to justify at scale.

Customer Quotes From the Launch

Anthropic published early customer notes. Quote only what the sources print. Do not invent numbers.

Asana (Aaron Vinh, Staff Software Engineer): over a 30% cut in task-completion latency and up to 2.5x faster inference per agent turn versus the model Asana uses today on AI Teammates evals.
HubSpot (Ze'ev Klapow, Distinguished Software Engineer): 92.8% average on its CRM simulation suite across three runs, best among the smaller models HubSpot tested, with the fastest finish and lowest false positive rate on a stale-record audit task.
AlphaSense (Daniel Campos, Distinguished Engineer): Ask in Document does about 8M calls a week; on 400 queries, Haiku 5.5 scored 0.84 versus 0.76 for Haiku 4.5.
Box (Yashodha Bhavnani, VP of AI Products): 11 points higher than Haiku 4.5 at about half the latency on early tests for large-volume analytical work.
Rogo (Alex Wang, Applied AI): Haiku fits short, high-volume lookups and subagents; a larger model builds the deck while Haiku pulls a 10-K segment revenue line.
Devin / Cognition (Walden Yan, Co-Founder and CPO): with Haiku 5.5 as the Fusion sidekick, FrontierCode holds 66.2 while cutting cost and latency, with Opus 5.5 as the lead in the Devin CLI.

These are vendor-supplied testimonials. Use them as signals for your own eval suite, not as a substitute for client-specific tests.

Availability, Safety, and Platform Notes

Developers start with the model ID claude-haiku-5-5 on the Claude Platform. Anthropic also lists Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Claude.ai tiers and Claude Code can select Haiku 5.5. Python and TypeScript SDK updates add beta computer use and browser use support, which Anthropic says fit Haiku's speed and price profile.

On safety, Anthropic reports stronger alignment results versus Haiku 4.5, with fewer misaligned behaviors and lower willingness to help with misuse. Cybersecurity safeguards are tighter than Haiku 4.5 but less tight than Sonnet 5.5. Penetration testing stays blocked under standard safeguards. Biology safeguards match recent Sonnet and Opus settings. Teams that need wider cyber or biology access can apply to Anthropic's verification programs.

For agencies that already track Anthropic security tooling, pair this model note with our earlier Anthropic OSS Scanner agency guide. Model choice and dependency scanning are different layers. Clients will ask about both.

Agency Angle for India and USA Teams

If you sell agentic AI development or manage client support bots, Claude Haiku 5.5 is a routing decision, not a full stack swap. The winning pattern from Anthropic's own customer quotes is dual-model: a lead planner plus a cheap, fast subagent.

Practical use cases that match the launch brief:

Live support and chat where latency is the product feature
Classification and routing across ticket queues and CRM fields
Summaries and compaction before a larger model reasons
Document Q&A on one or a few files at high weekly volume
Coding sidekicks that pull facts, grep context, or apply narrow edits
Browser and desktop automation for repetitive form and data tasks

Debugged Pro's software development consulting work with India and USA agencies usually starts with a cost map. Count calls per journey. Mark which steps need Sonnet-grade reasoning. Move the rest to a Haiku-class model only after your own eval pack passes.

Do not sell a blanket "switch everything to Haiku 5.5" migration. Long prompts lose the 90% discount. Complex coding still belongs on larger models. Effort settings can quietly raise cost if someone leaves max effort on by default.

Governance fit with NIST AI RMF

Cheaper models make it easier to run more agents. More agents create more tool calls, more retries, and more places for quiet failures. Map the change to the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. Treat model routing as a govern and map decision. Treat latency and cost budgets as measure targets. Treat approval gates on money, identity, and privacy paths as manage controls.

For BFSI and healthcare clients in India, keep human review on refund, KYC, and medical advice paths even when Haiku makes retries cheap. For USA teams under sector rules, the same rule applies. Lower token prices are not a waiver.

Practical Checklist for Your Next Sprint

Use this as a one-week pilot on one client journey:

Pick one high-volume path such as ticket triage, FAQ deflection, or document lookup.
Baseline Haiku 4.5 or your current small model on accuracy, latency, and cost per successful task.
Run Haiku 5.5 at medium effort first, then test high effort only on failing cases.
Split prompts under and over 100k tokens so finance sees which tier you actually hit.
Keep Sonnet or Opus as the lead for planning and multi-file coding; give Haiku the sidekick jobs.
Log cache hit rates if you also move Sonnet loops to the new $0.10 cache read price.
Gate high-risk tools with human approval even when Haiku makes extra calls cheap.
Show the client a weekly packet: cost per task, latency, error classes, and which steps stayed on larger models.

If a vendor demo cannot show your prompt-length mix and effort setting, treat the 90% price claim as a marketing upper bound, not your invoice.
