What Claude for Government is and who can buy it

Claude for Government runs in the Claude Desktop app for Chat and Claude Code. Sign-in and inference go through a dedicated government environment inside Palantir's FedRAMP High boundary.

Anthropic says the FedRAMP High authorization appears on the FedRAMP Marketplace under Palantir Federal Cloud Service Supporting Services, because the product runs on Palantir's FedStart platform.

Eligible buyers include US federal, state, and local agencies. Qualifying public sector organizations and government contractors that support government work can also request access through Anthropic sales.

Desktop first: Chat and Claude Code in Claude Desktop, not a full web or mobile Gov experience.
CUI and High Impact: Controlled Unclassified Information and FIPS 199 High Impact data are authorized in this product.
Models: new Claude models generally reach government users shortly after commercial release; admins choose which models each user can access.
Not full parity: Anthropic states it is not at full feature parity with Claude Enterprise.

Why Claude for Government GA matters for agency stacks

Public sector pilots stall when spend is open-ended or audit evidence is weak. GA puts spending controls, SCIM mappings, and audit logs next to coding and drafting work in one authorized boundary.

TechRepublic notes that new capabilities should generally arrive for government users on the same cadence as commercial Claude. That matters when your roadmap assumes Claude Code features will not lag for months.

For agencies, the win is not another chatbot. It is a path to put Claude into memo drafting, RFP review, casework support, and software modernization without inventing a separate governance model for every tool.

Anthropic bills Claude for Government as prepaid usage in fixed increments. There is no per-seat fee and no seat minimum. A hard not-to-exceed cap sits on top of that prepaid balance.

Administrators can set spending and model limits for user groups. Department admins can allocate usage to sub-agencies. SCIM mappings can apply rate limits, spend caps, and model permissions by tier.

Audit, dual approval, and what exports contain

Sensitive Anthropic-side operations require dual approval. Admin actions land in audit logs. Conversation history stays on the user's device.

Usage exports are metering data, not conversation content. That split helps teams answer inspector general or ATO evidence requests without dumping chat text into a spreadsheet.

Claude for Government early access: Microsoft 365 and Claude Code CLI

Two more products are in early access under the same government framework: the Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365. TechRepublic and ExecutiveBiz both report that shared environment story.

FedRAMP paths: Desktop product versus Bedrock and Vertex

Agencies often confuse three different Claude paths. Mixing them is the fastest way to fail a security review.

Claude for Government: FedRAMP High Desktop product for Chat and Claude Code in the dedicated Palantir-hosted government environment.
Claude on Amazon Bedrock (GovCloud): FedRAMP High API path; also noted for DoD IL4/IL5 workloads on Bedrock GovCloud.
Claude on Google Cloud Vertex AI with Assured Workloads: FedRAMP High API path through Google Cloud.
Claude API from Anthropic / Claude Enterprise: not FedRAMP authorized today, even if purchased on a commercial marketplace.

Rule of thumb for proposals: if the client needs FedRAMP High chat and coding in Desktop, quote Claude for Government. If they need FedRAMP High model APIs inside their cloud ATO, quote Bedrock GovCloud or Vertex Assured Workloads.

Procurement notes: GSA OneGov, direct buys, and California SITeS

ExecutiveBiz reported that Anthropic's GSA OneGov $1 per user offer was extended through October 31, 2026, after it was set to lapse on September 30. Confirm current vehicle terms with GSA and Anthropic before you put $1 pricing in a client deck.

Anthropic says it is open to contracting directly with agencies. Buyers can also pursue available federal procurement channels, including GSA vehicles and reseller paths such as Carahsoft where those contracts apply.

California state and local entities can buy Claude through CDT's SITeS program under agreement STP-GENAI-26-ANTHROPIC. CDT administers eligibility. Orders use Std. Form 20A with SKUs from the contract exhibit.

Existing beta users can switch to the Desktop app and import conversation history in-app, according to ExecutiveBiz. Plan a short cutover window so MDM packages and SSO groups land before staff lose beta habits.

DoW supply chain risk designation: what agencies should and should not assume

In March 2026, the Department of War designated Anthropic a supply chain risk. Anthropic states that designation applies only when Claude is used as a direct part of DoW contracts and subcontracts.

It does not apply to other federal agencies, to state or local governments, or to commercial use. For DoW contractors, Anthropic says it does not limit Claude use outside covered DoW work.

Anthropic is challenging the designation. On August 27, 2026, a federal court in the Northern District of California ruled that one supply chain risk designation was unlawful. A separate designation remains in litigation. Always have counsel and the client security office review current status before you bid DoW-adjacent work.

Delivery checklist for India and USA agency teams

India and USA shops supporting US public sector clients need the same facts written into the statement of work. Here is the checklist we use before a pilot kickoff.

Confirm buyer eligibility with Anthropic public sector sales. Contractors must show they support government work.
Pick the right path: Claude for Government Desktop versus Bedrock GovCloud versus Vertex Assured Workloads.
Write the data boundary: CUI and FIPS 199 High Impact belong only where the product and ATO allow them.
Price prepaid usage with a hard not-to-exceed cap. Do not invent seat math for this product.
Map identity early: SSO, SCIM groups, seat tiers, model allow lists, and department sub-allocations.
Define export evidence: usage metering and admin audit logs for ATO and inspector general asks; chats stay on devices.
Scope early access carefully: Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 may not be ready for every production lane on day one.
Staff dual shore reviews: USA security owners approve data classes; India builders implement Desktop workflows and test harnesses.

Good first use cases stay close to Anthropic's own examples: document review, research briefs, drafting, case processing support, legacy code documentation, and vulnerability triage with human approval. Avoid promising unattended decisions on benefits, tax, or justice outcomes.

Sample pilot plan India USA teams can run in four weeks

Week 1: access, identity, and spend rails

Submit the sales request, confirm FedRAMP package access needs, and freeze the prepaid increment size. Stand up SSO and a small SCIM group with a low spend cap.

Week 2: Desktop workflows only

Run three workflows: memo drafting from local files, RFP clause extraction, and a Claude Code modernization spike on a non-production repo. Keep every artifact in the approved device and repo path.

Week 3: oversight proof

Export usage metering, review admin audit events, and walk a dual-approval sensitive op in a tabletop. Document what is not in the export: conversation text.

Week 4: go or no-go

Compare burn against the hard cap. Decide whether Microsoft 365 early access or Claude Code CLI belongs in phase two. Update the client risk register with DoW designation scope if any DoW-adjacent work is nearby.

India leads can own harness scripts, prompt libraries, and regression checks. USA leads should own ATO language, data class decisions, and contracting vehicle choices. That split keeps the pilot fast without hiding compliance ownership.

What Claude for Government does not replace

Authorization does not remove agency-level safeguards. Teams still decide which information can be processed, where human review is required, and how AI shows up in sensitive workflows.

Claude for Government is not a substitute for Bedrock or Vertex when the architecture needs FedRAMP High APIs inside the agency cloud. It is also not a full clone of Claude Enterprise features on web and mobile.

Treat press timelines as starting points. OneGov dollar offers, early access seats, and model lists change. Re-check Anthropic sales and the administrator guide before you lock a fixed-fee pilot.
