Digital marketing agency Graphite updated its AI Tells study after Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5 last week. VentureBeat published the findings ahead of Graphite's planned Thursday release. The comparison covers articles from ten models and human writers across 9,974 matched topics.

The headline metric is word-distribution divergence. It measures how differently two text collections use words overall. Opus 5.5 scored 0.052 against the human sample, down from 0.064 for Opus 5. That is a 19% reduction. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra moved the other way, scoring 0.109, up from 0.101 for GPT-5.6 Sol.

Graphite CEO Ethan Smith told VentureBeat the pattern is not a simple climb toward "more human" writing. "I think what we see here is not that there's a steady progression of it being better or worse," he said. "It's just sort of different, and each one is different, which is kind of surprising."

Em dashes became a public punchline for machine copy. Graphite's numbers show why chase-the-punctuation QA fails. Opus 5.5 used about 0.015 em dashes per 1,000 words. Opus 5 used 2.92. That is roughly a 99% decline. The new model even sits below the human sample rate in Graphite's set.

So a clean page with no long dashes no longer proves a human wrote it. Human writers still use the mark. Newer models may avoid it on purpose.

Graphite also scored "mannered prose," Anthropic's label for flourish-heavy style. The score fell 37%, from 16.75 for Opus 5 to 10.57 for Opus 5.5. Humans in the sample sat at 6.65. Older tells faded. Others spiked. Compared with Opus 5, Opus 5.5 used "can help you" eight times as often and "is especially helpful" 12 times as often in Graphite's articles. Opus 5 used "is genuinely" 26 times as often as its successor.

Model families diverge too. Opus 5.5 used "the most powerful" 24 times as often as Astra. Astra used "not necessarily" 17 times as often as Opus 5.5. Graphite describes more superlatives in Claude and more hedging in Astra.
