The AI website builder boom just hit one of the best known names in web building. Squarespace is laying off about 19% of its staff, roughly 300 people. The news broke on November 2, 2026.

The company did not blame AI directly. But both TechCrunch and The Verge placed the cuts against a clear backdrop: prompt-based site builders are changing how websites get made. If you run or work at a web agency, this one is close to home.

I'm Nitin from the Debugged Pro team. Below I cover what was confirmed, why it matters, and what agencies in India and the USA can do this quarter.

What Happened at Squarespace

Here are the verified facts. They come from the reporting by TechCrunch and The Verge, which first broke the story.

The cut: About 19% of the global workforce, or around 300 people.
Company size: The Verge says the cuts affect about 300 of Squarespace's 1,800 employees.
Severance: Affected staff get 16 weeks of base pay and healthcare benefits into May 2027.
Who confirmed it: Squarespace spokesperson Jeff Seedman, in statements to both outlets.
Stated reason: A restructuring to simplify operations and move faster.

Seedman said the changes are meant to "simplify how we operate, sharpen our priorities and enable the company to move faster." He added that this positions Squarespace "for its next phase of growth."

A Quick Look at the Company's Path

Squarespace was founded in 2004. It went public in 2021 at a $10 billion valuation, then struggled to win strong investor interest.

In 2024 it went private again through a $7 billion private equity deal. The Verge notes that the firm Permira closed that acquisition around the same time the company pushed hard into AI.

Why the AI Website Builder Market Matters Here

Website building has changed a lot in a short time. TechCrunch describes "vibe-coding" website builders that need only simple prompts to produce working front-end designs. That makes it possible to launch a site with far less effort than before.

Squarespace is not sitting still. It launched an AI tool called Blueprint in 2024. According to The Verge, Blueprint builds websites and also writes site copy, blog posts and product descriptions.

The company has also announced Forma, an upcoming AI native platform. People can join a waitlist for it now.

The Competition Is Moving Fast

TechCrunch lists a few moves that show how hot this space has become:

Wix bought the AI app builder Base44 for $80 million last year.
Lovable raised a $400 million Series C in August, at a $13.3 billion valuation.
Google launched Stitch, which quickly generates user interface designs.

Put those next to a 19% cut at a classic site builder, and you can see the pressure. Money is flowing to tools where the prompt is the product.

What This Means for Web Agencies in India and the USA

Let's be honest about the hard part first. Simple brochure websites are becoming a commodity. A client who needs five pages and a contact form can now get a decent draft in minutes.

That affects a lot of agencies. In India, many small studios earn steady income from small business sites. In the USA, freelancers and small shops often do the same work for local businesses.

But a draft is not a finished product. In our client work, the questions that take the most time are rarely about layout. They are about data, integrations, speed, compliance and who maintains the site next year.

Where AI Website Builder Tools Fall Short

These are the gaps we see most often when clients bring us a site built with a prompt tool:

Custom integrations. Payment gateways, CRMs, ERPs and booking systems often need real code.
Accessibility. Generated pages may miss alt text, contrast or keyboard support.
Performance. Heavy scripts and images can slow the site on mobile networks.
Ownership and export. Some platforms make it hard to move your site elsewhere.
Security and updates. Someone still has to own patches, backups and access control.

There is also the content itself. AI tools can write copy fast, but they do not know your client's prices, policies or local rules. A wrong claim on a service page can cost more than the whole website did.

None of this means the tools are bad. It means the work moves. The value shifts from building the first page to making the whole system reliable.

How Agencies Can Use an AI Website Builder Without Losing Clients

The smart move is not to fight these tools. It is to fold them into your process and charge for what they cannot do.

1. Use AI Tools for Speed, Not Final Delivery

Use prompt-based builders for wireframes, mood boards and first drafts. That shortens discovery calls and helps clients react to something real.

Then rebuild or harden the parts that matter. Be clear with clients about which parts came from a tool and which were built by hand.

2. Sell Outcomes, Not Page Counts

Pricing by page count gets weaker when a page takes seconds to make. Price by results instead: leads captured, bookings made, checkout speed or support tickets reduced.

This works for clients in both India and the USA. A business owner cares far more about enquiries than about how many templates you used.

3. Make Accessibility and Quality a Selling Point

Accessibility is a clear way to stand out. The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are the main reference most teams use to check sites.

Offer an audit of AI-built sites against those guidelines. Many owners have never checked, and the fixes are often quick to show.

4. Move Up to Custom Builds and MVPs

The work that AI site builders handle poorly is where agencies can grow. Think dashboards, customer portals, internal tools and products with real business logic.

If your team already does custom web development services, lead with that in your sales pitch. If clients want to test a product idea fast, an AI MVP development package fits well between a DIY builder and a full build.

5. Watch Your Own AI Costs

AI tools are cheap to try but can get expensive at scale. Track usage per project, so you know your real margin.

We covered this in detail in our piece on the real cost of AI agents for agencies. The same thinking applies to AI site and code generators.

6. Train Your Team on the New Workflow

Your designers and developers should try the main tools hands-on. Give them a small internal project and compare the output with your usual process.

Write down what worked and what needed fixing. That short internal guide will help you quote faster and explain your value to clients.

A Simple Checklist Before You Recommend an AI Website Builder

When a client asks, "Can't we just use one of those AI tools?", walk through these questions together:

Can we export the code and content if we leave the platform?
Who owns the domain, the content and the customer data?
Does the site meet accessibility rules for our market?
How fast does it load on a mid-range phone on a mobile network?
What will it cost in two years, once traffic and features grow?
Who fixes it when an integration breaks?

If the answers are fine, a builder may be the right call. Saying so builds trust. Clients remember the agency that gave honest advice, even when it meant a smaller invoice.

What We Do Not Know Yet

A few points are still unclear, so it is better not to guess:

Squarespace has not said which teams or regions are most affected.
There is no public launch date for Forma in the reports we reviewed.
The company did not say how much of the restructuring is tied to AI.

We will update our thinking as more details come out. For now, the bigger trend is clear from the funding and deals alone.
