Employers are now putting real money behind AI skills. Robert Half's 2027 Salary Guide, released on October 1, 2026, found that 72% of US managers are increasing pay for relevant AI skills. Another 42% said AI expertise commands more than other technical skills.

Fortune picked up the data on October 5 with a simple angle. Many workers fear AI will take their jobs, yet the people who know how to use it are the ones getting better offers.

I'm Nitin Kumar, Lead Project Coordinator at Debugged Pro. We staff and run software projects for clients in India and the USA, so salary trends land on my desk quickly. I went through the Robert Half release, the Fortune report and ManpowerGroup's global talent data. Here is what the numbers say and what I think agencies should do about them.

What Robert Half Found About AI Skills and Pay

Robert Half has published its salary guide since 1950. This year's edition covers projected starting salaries for hundreds of roles across seven professional fields. It draws on market data and input from Robert Half recruiters. It also uses a survey of more than 2,000 hiring managers, business leaders and workers in the US.

The headline findings from the official Robert Half 2027 Salary Guide release are:

72% of managers are increasing pay for relevant AI skills.
42% say AI expertise commands more than other technical skills.
57% are offering higher-than-planned salaries to attract new hires, with specialized skills as the top reason.
64% say job offers are more competitive than they were three years ago.
60% say pay transparency has helped them attract higher-quality candidates.

Here is the part that gets less attention. Average starting salaries across all seven fields are projected to rise only 1.9% in 2027. So this is not a broad pay boom. Companies are holding most budgets steady and spending extra only where the skills are hard to find.

What employers mean by AI skills

"AI skills" can sound vague, so it helps to hear how Robert Half defines the demand. Dawn Fay, operational president at Robert Half, told Fortune that employers will pay more for people "who understand where AI can add value, can integrate it into day-to-day processes, and can apply it responsibly to solve real business challenges."

Notice what is missing from that list. It does not say "can build a large language model." For most roles, the premium goes to people who can apply AI to real work and do it safely.

The Tech Roles Expected to Gain Most in 2027

Robert Half also named roles whose salaries should grow faster than the 1.9% average. In technology, the three it listed are:

Business intelligence developer
Data scientist
Cybersecurity engineer

In marketing and creative, it named marketing automation specialist, marketing analytics specialist and digital marketing manager. All of these sit close to data, automation or security. That fits a wider pattern. AI projects need clean data, someone who can measure results and someone who keeps the system secure.

Fortune added a wider data point from LinkedIn. It reported that AI job postings in the US have doubled since 2023. The average AI job posting offers around $177,000 a year, compared with roughly $80,000 for non-AI roles.

Where US employers are stretching budgets

The guide also ranked US cities by the share of managers offering higher-than-planned starting salaries. San Francisco leads at 66%, followed by Denver at 65% and Seattle at 64%. New York (48%) and Chicago (47%) sit near the bottom of the list.

For agencies with US clients, this is useful context. A client in San Francisco or Seattle may find it hard and costly to hire locally for AI work. That often makes a remote or offshore delivery team more attractive.

The AI Skills Gap in India Is Even Wider

The US numbers tell only half the story for agencies like ours. India has its own talent squeeze, and in some ways it is tighter.

The ManpowerGroup 2026 Talent Shortage Survey covered more than 39,000 employers across 41 countries. For the first time, AI skills became the hardest skills to find worldwide, ahead of engineering and traditional IT. Globally, 72% of employers reported difficulty filling roles.

India came in higher. According to ManpowerGroup India, 82% of the 3,051 Indian employers surveyed reported trouble finding talent. AI model and application development (39%) and AI literacy (38%) topped India's list of hard-to-find skills.

So the pressure works from both sides. US clients want AI-ready teams, and Indian employers are competing hard for the same people. For agencies that hire in India and sell to US clients, both trends land at the same time.

Pay Is Not the Only Lever

Money matters, but the guide shows two other things that shape hiring. Both are cheaper than a big raise.

Clear salary ranges

Robert Half found that 96% of employers include salary ranges in job descriptions or plan to. They named these top benefits:

Attracting a higher-quality candidate pool (60%)
Improving employee retention (57%)
Strengthening salary negotiations (53%)
Reducing time to hire (34%)

For a small agency, posting a range also saves time. Candidates who expect far more simply do not apply.

Flexible work

Workers in the survey were asked which perks beyond healthcare would most sway their decision. Flexible work hours came first at 67%, and hybrid work scored 51%. Agencies that already run remote teams across time zones can make this a real selling point.

What the AI Skills Premium Means for Agencies

An agency sells its people's time and know-how. When the market value of certain skills goes up, it affects your hiring costs, your retention and what you can charge. Here is how I would respond.

1. Define the AI skills each role actually needs

Do not write "AI experience" in every job post. Be specific. A QA engineer might need to write AI-assisted test cases and review them. A backend developer might need to call model APIs, handle prompts and manage costs. A project coordinator might need to judge where AI can save hours in a client workflow.

2. Test for real ability, not buzzwords

Plenty of resumes now list AI tools. Fewer candidates can explain why an AI suggestion is wrong. Give a short practical task and ask them to talk through their choices. Our breakdown of the AI interview tools changing developer hiring shows how some companies are already doing this.

3. Train your current team first

Hiring specialists at a premium is expensive. Training the people you already have is usually cheaper and builds loyalty. A simple plan could look like this:

Pick two or three approved AI tools and set clear rules on client data.
Run short weekly sessions where team members share what worked on real tasks.
Pair junior developers with a senior who reviews AI-generated code closely.
Track time saved on a few repeat tasks so you can show clients the gain.

4. Review pay before you lose people

If 72% of US managers are paying more for these skills, your best people will hear about it. Check what you pay the team members who are already strong with AI. A small raise now is often cheaper than replacing someone mid-project.

5. Price AI work as a skill, not a shortcut

Some clients assume AI should make every project cheaper. Sometimes it does. But setting up AI features safely takes skilled people, and the market now pays more for them. Be open about where AI saves time and where it adds specialist work.

A Quick Comparison for Hiring Decisions

Option	Best for	Watch out for
Hire a senior AI specialist	Model work, architecture and AI product features	High salary and strong competition for talent
Upskill current developers	Daily AI tool use, testing and integration work	Needs time, clear rules and code review
Add a dedicated offshore team	Scaling delivery for US clients at lower cost	Pick a partner that tests real AI ability

What We Still Don't Know

How long the AI skills premium will last as more people train up.
How large the pay gap is for specific roles once the full guide data is compared.
Whether Indian employers will match the US trend with similar pay increases.

Key Takeaways

72% of US managers are raising pay for relevant AI skills, and 42% value them above other tech skills.
Overall pay growth is modest at a projected 1.9%, so the extra money is targeted at hard-to-find skills.
Data, BI and cybersecurity roles are among the tech jobs expected to gain most in 2027.
India's talent shortage is 82%, with AI development and AI literacy the hardest skills to find.
Agencies should define, test and train for AI skills and review pay for their strongest people.
