If your clients ask for always-on agents, AI agent privacy is no longer a side slide. It is the main sales pitch. Meta and OpenAI are now competing on who sounds safer with your data.

On October 10, 2026, Hayden Field at The Verge asked the blunt question: AI agent makers are promising privacy, but will they deliver? This guide sticks to that reporting and turns it into checks India USA agencies can run this week.

We also map the risk work to the voluntary NIST AI Risk Management Framework. No invented quotes. No invented stats. Only what those sources support.

Key Takeaways on AI agent privacy

Privacy is the new competitive line between Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots.
Muse uses a secure VM, yet Meta can still access the data today.
Meta plans cryptographic access prevention later this year, per The Verge.
A Muse zero-day was patched after a researcher showed possible takeover risk.
Dots leans on user rules and enterprise retention options as trust signals.
Agencies should test defaults, not marketing copy, before client rollout.
NIST AI RMF habits help India and USA teams govern agent data risk in plain language.

Why AI agent privacy became a product war

Field’s story opens at OpenAI DevDay. Sam Altman unveiled Dots and said the company wants to “set a new standard for privacy in frontier AI.” OpenAI spent the day taking veiled shots at Meta’s Muse.

Muse had launched only a couple of months earlier as a safer alternative to OpenClaw. Mark Zuckerberg called it “built from the ground up for privacy and security.” So each lab is selling the same idea: trust us more than the other team.

That pitch matters because agents need more personal context than a chat box. Messages, contacts, purchases, and sometimes payment flows sit close to the model. If the privacy story fails, adoption stalls for workplaces in India and the USA.

Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, wrote on X that Muse aimed to be like OpenClaw, yet safe, secure, easy to use, and ready to scale to billions of people. The ambition is clear. The delivery is what agencies must verify.

What Meta Muse actually promises on privacy

Meta stores Muse user data on a secure virtual machine. Zuckerberg described an “isolated linux computer with a browser, CPU, memory, and storage.” That design separates one user’s workspace from another user’s workspace.

Meta also said most of the Muse build effort went into careful design and engineering for safer operation. The company blog note, as Field quotes it, admits Muse can and will still make mistakes. Meta expects those mistakes to be less frequent and less damaging because of the safety systems.

Adoption moved fast. Muse topped App Store charts and, per Apptopia as cited by The Verge, gained 600,000 daily active users in the US within weeks. Speed makes privacy gaps more expensive for client brands.

We covered Muse security pressure earlier in our Meta Muse VM escape agency guide. This article focuses on the privacy promises themselves, not only escape bugs.

Where Muse privacy claims still fall short

Isolation between users is not the same as isolation from Meta. The Verge reports that Meta itself can still access data in the VM. Meta plans to introduce a way to cryptographically and verifiably prevent that access later this year.

Until that ships, agencies should treat “secure VM” as a useful control, not a finished guarantee. Ask vendors what “prevent Meta from accessing data” means in contracts, logs, and audits. Write the answer into the client risk register.

Security events already tested the story. A researcher quickly exposed a zero-day that could allow someone to take control of Muse. Meta patched it. 404 Media also reported multiple serious security issues near launch, including one that could have allowed users to reach Meta’s own internal databases.

Data reach looks broad even when Muse works as designed. Training on user inputs is on by default, though users can opt out. An Inc. reporter said Muse uploaded and read private messages without a clear ask. A YouTuber said Muse offered his address to a stranger through Marketplace.

Wired reported that the platform creates detailed profiles of friends and family. None of that surprised people who watch Meta products, Field notes. It does weaken the claim that Muse is uniquely privacy conscious.

How OpenAI positions Dots on AI agent privacy

OpenAI announced Dots in late September and used Muse’s weak spots as contrast. Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead, said OpenAI wants the “most trustworthy, safe, and secure assistant.” Altman showed user rules, including a rule that blocks purchases above a chosen dollar amount.

Glen Coates, OpenAI’s head of app platform, argued Meta is in a different position because Meta lacks an AI product with 1.2 billion users. He said launching something that makes Muse-style mistakes is something OpenAI would try hard to avoid.

For business buyers, OpenAI presented stronger enterprise data controls and zero data retention options. That means some enterprise setups can keep agent data off OpenAI servers by policy. Agencies should still verify which tier and which region that option actually covers.

Field notes there have not been many privacy scandals with Dots so far. Dots also sits on ChatGPT plans that start at $100 and up, so the user base is likely smaller. Fewer users can mean fewer public failure stories, not proof of a finished privacy system.

For product context on always-on OpenAI agents, see our earlier OpenAI Dots always-on agents agency guide. Pair that product view with the privacy checklist below before client demos.

User trust still hits hard limits

Even strong marketing copy may not remove discomfort. The Verge’s Allison Johnson felt uneasy typing bank information when a bot asked for it during a task. Muse has a Stripe integration to handle payments, which reduces some friction but does not erase the feeling.

Agencies in India and the USA hear the same hesitation from finance, healthcare, and legal buyers. Clients will ask who can see a statement, how long logs live, and who can reverse a mistaken send. If your demo skips those answers, the deal stalls after the wow moment.

Not every vendor leads with privacy. Instinct faced public criticism for reportedly broad terms of service that gave wide data access. Field writes that the company later seemed to make adjustments. That arc is a reminder: terms change after scrutiny, so keep reading the live ToS.

Field closes with a three-part industry pattern: make agents useful, make them cute enough to offset creepiness, and make privacy promises that hopefully hold. Agencies should treat the third part as a test plan, not a slogan.

NIST AI RMF habits for India USA agencies

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary and built to help organizations put trustworthiness into design, development, use, and evaluation. NIST released AI RMF 1.0 on January 26, 2023, and later added a Generative AI Profile (NIST-AI-600-1) on July 26, 2024.

On April 7, 2026, NIST also released a concept note for a Trustworthy AI in Critical Infrastructure profile. The core RMF is being revised as part of the White House AI Action Plan. You do not need every profile on day one. You do need a repeatable review loop.

For agent privacy reviews, keep the four RMF functions practical:

Govern: Name who owns agent data risk for each client engagement.
Map: List every system the agent can read, write, buy, or message.
Measure: Test defaults for training, sharing, retention, and vendor access.
Manage: Ship rules, kill switches, and contract language before wide rollout.

If you need help wiring those controls into a delivery plan, our software development consulting team can sit with your India or USA stakeholders and turn the checklist into tickets.

Practical AI agent privacy checklist for agencies

Use this list on Muse, Dots, or any rival agent before you put client data behind a demo login.

Map data paths. Write down messages, calendars, files, wallets, and CRM fields the agent can touch.
Test defaults. Check training opt-in or opt-out, marketplace sharing, and contact profiling on a fresh account.
Ask about vendor access. If the vendor can read the VM or logs today, document when cryptographic prevention arrives.
Set hard rules. Cap spend, block bulk messages, and require human approval for deletes or external posts.
Choose enterprise retention. Prefer zero data retention where the client’s industry needs it.
Patch and monitor. Track vendor advisories the same way you track dependency CVEs.
Brief the client in plain language. Show screenshots of defaults, not only the launch keynote clip.

Run the list twice: once for a personal trial account, once for a business account with SSO and retention settings. Gaps between those two modes are where clients get surprised.

Also keep a rollback plan. If an agent overshares a phone number or drafts a bad Marketplace reply, your team should know who revokes tokens and who notifies the client within the hour.

What India and USA client teams should ask this month

India teams often juggle DPDP readiness with vendor contracts written for US products. Ask where agent data is stored, who subprocessors are, and how deletion requests propagate into VMs and backups.

USA teams often start with security questionnaires and SOC2 packets. Add agent-specific asks: Can the vendor staff open a user VM. Are training defaults off for enterprise. Do purchase rules survive mobile clients and API wrappers.

Both markets should pressure-test cute demos. Field’s point is that labs count on usefulness and charm to offset creepiness while privacy promises catch up. Your job is to decide whether the promise is ready for that client’s data class.

If Muse or Dots fails a checklist item, do not scrap agents entirely. Narrow the scope. Start with read-only research. Keep payments and message sending behind human approval. Expand only after defaults and contracts match the risk.

How Debugged Pro teams should brief stakeholders

Lead with facts from The Verge, then show your own test notes. Name the open items: Meta access to Muse VMs, training defaults, Marketplace reach, and Dots retention options. Then assign owners and dates.

Keep the slide count short. One slide for claims. One slide for verified gaps. One slide for the agency checklist. One slide for next actions. Stakeholders remember the actions more than the model names.

Finally, revisit the brief when Meta ships cryptographic access prevention or when OpenAI changes Dots tiers. Privacy product claims move quarterly. Your client risk register should move with them.
