Every agency I know has had the same chat about Creative Cloud bills. Now a developer says he has an answer: seven free, open source Adobe alternatives that he built with help from AI. The project is called ArtCraft, and it spread fast on Reddit and Hacker News this past week.

The apps copy the look and tools of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign and Acrobat Pro. They are also very unfinished. Early testers found broken basics within a day.

I'm Nitin from the Debugged Pro team. We build websites, apps and AI tools for clients in India and the USA. Our designers live inside creative software all day. Here is a plain look at what ArtCraft shipped, how it was made and what it means for your team.

What Is ArtCraft and Why Is Everyone Talking About These Adobe Alternatives?

ArtCraft started last year as a "controllable AI for artists." It let people edit AI-made images and videos with precise tools. Over the weekend of October 3 and 4, 2026, it changed direction and launched a suite of seven open source apps.

According to Ars Technica's report on the ArtCraft launch, developer Brandon Thomas used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 to build them. He calls them "clean-room replacements" for Adobe's closed source software. The apps are written in Rust, and most also run in a web browser through WebAssembly.

The pitch is simple and bold. Thomas wrote on Reddit, "We're going to reach 100% [feature] parity within a month." A few days later on Hacker News, he softened that to say "99% parity will take a while, but I'm sure it'll be measured in months and not years."

The Seven ArtCraft Apps at a Glance

Each app maps to one well-known Adobe product. Here is the full lineup, with the status ArtCraft shows on its own apps page.

ArtCraft app	What it mirrors	Status
PhotoCraft	Photoshop	Early alpha
VectorCraft	Illustrator	In development
FilmCraft	Premiere Pro	In development
LightCraft	Lightroom (not Classic)	In development
PdfCraft	Acrobat Pro	Early alpha
EffectCraft	After Effects	In development
DesignCraft	InDesign	In development

A few details stand out for working teams:

Cross-platform. ArtCraft lists installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. Adobe does not support Linux at all, as PetaPixel points out.
Local first. The apps run on your own machine and your own files, with no cloud round trips.
No telemetry. Thomas said on Hacker News that the apps collect none.
Built for automation. PhotoCraft has a registry of more than 500 commands. A command line tool, a JSON control channel and an MCP server can call them, so an AI agent can drive the app.

How the Apps Were Built With Claude Opus 5.5

This is the part that matters most for software teams. In a Reddit post quoted by PetaPixel, Thomas says he is "not a casual vibe coder." He describes himself as a 15-year industry veteran who has used Rust for about a decade. PetaPixel notes he was CEO of Storyteller.ai and an engineer at Square.

Ars reports that he has coded only with AI tools since February. He believes developers can now build "1:1 functional equivalents" of popular paid software.

His comments were not modest. "Software is over," he wrote in one thread, claiming he had "one-shotted Photoshop. The whole thing." He also said on Hacker News that he plans to go after Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and SolidWorks next.

So where does the money come from? Thomas says sales of token-based access to ArtCraft's existing AI image and video tools will fund the free apps. Those AI tools sit inside the apps as an option, next to third-party models. "If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't," he wrote.

How Good Are These Adobe Alternatives Right Now?

Honestly, not ready for paid work. The PhotoCraft project on GitHub says so in plain words. It calls itself early alpha and says "it is not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work."

The same page lists the biggest gaps:

AI and generative features
About twenty missing tools
Depth in typography and pro workflows
Plug-in compatibility

Hands-on reports were harsher. One Hacker News commenter who said they had worked in design and film for years opened some simple layout files in PhotoCraft. They listed selection that was off from the cursor, text that would not resize, heavy lag and shortcuts that did nothing. Another commenter noted that the apps looked to be only about a week old.

PetaPixel's coverage of the ArtCraft apps makes a fair point here. "100% feature parity" is not the same as matching Adobe on stability, speed or color accuracy. In studios where calibration, plug-ins and client file exchange matter, there is little room to gamble on new software.

The Legal Questions Around AI-Built Clones

Reverse engineering means rebuilding what software does without copying its code. Ars notes this has generally been found legally acceptable. The PhotoCraft project says it was built "from public specs and observed behaviour only," with no proprietary code, shaders or assets.

There are still two open risks:

Trade dress. If an app looks too much like Adobe's familiar design, that alone could cause legal trouble, according to Ars.
Patents. PetaPixel points out that Adobe holds thousands of patents, which can cover how a tool works or looks.

There is also a newer debate. Much of the code was written by an AI model, so some developers question whether "clean-room" still means what it used to. PetaPixel says it asked Adobe for comment. At the time of writing, we have not seen a public response from Adobe.

For agencies, the lesson is wider than ArtCraft. If you ship AI-written code to clients, you need to know where it came from and who owns it. We covered this in our guide to tracking AI-generated code and attribution in client projects.

Why People Keep Searching for Adobe Alternatives

Thomas says he started the project after being "bit by the dark pattern 'cancellation fee' one too many times." That complaint is not new.

In June 2024, the US Justice Department filed a complaint against Adobe on referral from the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC's press release on the Adobe case says Adobe hid an early termination fee on its "annual paid monthly" plan. Per the complaint, that fee was 50 percent of the remaining monthly payments if you cancelled in the first year.

PetaPixel also notes that people have been hungry for options for a long time. Adobe already faces strong rivals in single categories. Think DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro for video, or Affinity for photo editing.

What This Means for Agencies in India and the USA

Most agencies pay for creative software seat by seat. A five-designer team in Pune or Austin feels every renewal. Free tools that open the same files would change that math. But only if they work.

For Design and Creative Teams

Do not move client projects to ArtCraft yet. Keep Adobe or your current paid tools for anything with a deadline. Try the new apps on internal work, mood boards or old files you can afford to break.

Watch one thing closely: file fidelity. PhotoCraft opens and saves layered PSD files. If that holds up on real client files, it could be a handy viewer. Not every team member needs a full Photoshop seat.

For Software and Product Teams

The bigger story is speed. If one developer with an AI model can copy the look of Photoshop this fast, your client's SaaS product is not safe either. A familiar interface is no longer much of a moat.

What still protects a product is the hard part: years of edge cases, testing, support and trust. That is exactly what ArtCraft lacks today. When we plan products with clients, we now ask, "What here would be hard to copy even with AI?" Our software development consulting team can help you work through that question.

For Automation Work

The MCP server and command line tools are worth a look. Batch edits, exports and simple retouching could run from scripts or agents. Creative tools are moving this way across the board, as we saw with the Figma AI agent for design teams.

How to Test Adobe Alternatives Without Risking Client Work

Here is the simple plan we would follow with any new creative tool:

Pick one tester. Choose a designer who knows the Adobe app well and can spot gaps fast.
Use a spare machine or account. Keep early alpha software away from client folders and shared drives.
Build a test pack. Collect five to ten real files, such as layered PSDs, PDFs and a short video edit, with names and data scrubbed.
Check round trips. Open, edit, save and reopen each file in the original Adobe app. Note anything that changes.
Time common tasks. Compare how long a basic retouch, export or layout tweak takes in each tool.
Read the license. MIT and Apache 2.0 are permissive, but the ArtCraft name and logos are trademarks and are not covered.
Review again in 90 days. Alpha software changes fast. Set a date to retest instead of deciding once.

Key Takeaways

ArtCraft released seven free, open source Adobe alternatives in early October 2026, built in Rust with help from Claude Opus 5.5.
The apps mirror Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign and Acrobat Pro.
They are in early alpha or in development, and early testers reported broken basics.
Reverse engineering is generally legal, but trade dress and patents remain open risks.
Agencies should test on internal work only and keep paid tools for client deadlines.
The wider lesson: AI makes copying software faster, so real value lies in quality, support and trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ArtCraft's Adobe alternatives really free?

Yes. The seven apps are open source under MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses and need no subscription. ArtCraft makes money by selling optional credits for its separate AI image and video tools. You can also bring your own compute or third-party AI subscriptions.

Can PhotoCraft replace Photoshop for client work today?

Not yet. The PhotoCraft project itself says it is in early alpha and is not a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work. Missing pieces include generative features, about twenty tools, deeper typography and plug-in support. Use it for tests, not client deadlines.

Is it legal to clone the look of Adobe software?

Reverse engineering software without copying its code has generally been found legally acceptable. The open questions are trade dress, if an app looks too much like Adobe's, and patents, since Adobe holds thousands of them. No court has ruled on ArtCraft, so watch this space.

Which operating systems do the ArtCraft apps support?

ArtCraft lists installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. Six of the seven apps also run in a browser through WebAssembly. FilmCraft, the video editor, is desktop only for now. Adobe does not offer Linux versions of its own apps.

What are some mature Adobe alternatives right now?

For video, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro are widely used. For design and photo editing, Affinity has a large following. GIMP and Krita are long-running free, open source options. Test any tool with your real files before moving client work.
